Clinical Director and Principal Physiotherapist, Mary Ann Tay, has more than15 years of clinical experience working with the geriatric clientele in acute, subacute, community and primary care settings. She has completed geriatric, neurological, musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary postings. She was sponsored by Tan Tock Seng Hospital for her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at University of Sydney, Australia, and King’s College London, UK, respectively. She holds a Master’s degree in Gerontology (with Merit).
She worked in Tan Tock Seng Hospital for ten years before transferring to National Healthcare Group Polyclinics (NHGP). She is a certified master trainer for the Otago Exercise Programme (Later Life Training, UK), an evidence-based falls prevention programme for frail older adults. She was the physio lead for the Community Health Team (CHT) in TTSH and has taken care of clientele with a wide range of conditions at home. These include Motor Neuron Disease on home ventilation, post orthopaedic surgery, post stroke and deconditioned seniors requiring further rehabilitation upon discharge. She was also part of the multidisciplinary team caring for older patients at high risk of falls, covering the outpatient falls clinic services. At NHGP, she further honed her physiotherapy skills in managing musculoskeletal and arthritic pain in primary care, completing training in Spinal Manual Therapy and Clinical Pilates.
Dedicated to improving care for seniors, Mary has led several research and quality improvement projects in TTSH and NHGP. She has presented her work at several local and international conferences. Her last presentation was on improving falls prevention in primary care at the prestigious Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Forum at Orlando, Florida, USA, in December 2023.

Mary is a seasoned educator. She is an Associate Faculty of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)’s physiotherapy course and guest lecturer for Nanyang Polytechnic’s Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Gerontology & Community Health). She has conducted multiple multidisciplinary workshops across her career and mentored students, juniors and peers within the physiotherapy team. She holds an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) and is trained in motivational interviewing. Her training experience has helped her communicate and establish good rapport with her clients and their caregivers, enabling an easy partnership for her to motivate and teach exercise therapy.
Mary is a firm believer that exercise can do wonders to empower and improve quality of life. She also believes strongly in end-of-life planning and is comfortable having conversations with patient and family members about what makes life meaningful. On top of English and Mandarin, she is able to communicate in basic dialect (Hokkien and Cantonese) and is reasonably fluent in Malay.
Mary is also a proud mother of two beautiful children, who keep her busy but have taught her important life skills such as multi-tasking and mindfulness.
In her free time, Mary enjoys meeting up with friends, going for long walks, practising Pilates and playing her keyboard or ukulele.
